WACO, Texas -- 2005 Baylor College World Series team members Kyle Reynolds (2003-05) and Michael Griffin (2002-05) were given an extra inning with which to work Saturday, and Baylor's Alumni Team made the 2007 squad pay. Reynolds' 10th-inning, two-out RBI single through the right side scored Griffin from second as the Bears and the Alumni Team battled to a 2-2 tie at Baylor Ballpark.
The game was scheduled for 10 innings so that Baylor head coach Steve Smith could allow his pitchers to get needed preseason work. The 2007 squad led 2-1 entering the bottom of the 10th, but Griffin led off with a single to right, moved to second on a Trey Webb groundout and scored two batters later on Reynolds' RBI single.
Mike Huggins (2000-02) singled home Jon Topolski (1996-99) with one out in the first to give the Alumni Team an early lead. That run stood until the top of the eighth when Aaron Miller singled and then scored on a Dustin Dickerson double. The 2007 Bears took a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth. Shaver Hansen led off with a single, advanced to second on Matt Sodolak's sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Drew Jeffcoat's sacrifice fly.
Six 2007 Baylor pitchers worked the game, three for each team. Randall Linebaugh allowed a run on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Jake Weghorst tossed four no-hit, scoreless innings with a walk and two strikeouts. Tim Matthews pitched the final two innings for the 2007 Bears.
After Cory VanAllen (2004-06) and Zane Carlson (2000-04) worked one scoreless inning each, Kendal Volz, Aaron Williams and Nick Cassavechia pitched for the Alumni Team. Volz scattered four hits with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Williams allowed an unearned run on four hits in 2.0 innings, and Cassavechia surrendered one run on two hits with three strikeouts in 2.0 innings.
Baylor opens its 2007 season Feb. 9-11 at the Minute Maid Park College Classic. The Bears face Houston at 7 p.m. Friday, Rice at 7 p.m. Saturday and Vanderbilt at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
