Box Score

WACO, Texas --- The No. 18 Baylor softball team opened the final day at the Getterman Classic with a run-rule victory over Kentucky, 9-0, before defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-1, in game two as the Lady Bears claimed their fourth Getterman Classic title in action at Getterman Stadium on Sunday. With the sweep, Baylor improved to 6-0 on the season.

"I was real pleased with the effort the team gave throughout the tournament," head coach Glenn Moore said. "Obviously, there are some things we will need to work on; but, overall, it was a great tournament and a great way to start the year."

Baylor clinched the tournament championship with a 9-0, six-inning victory over the Wildcats in game one of the day. The Lady Bears jumped out early on the Wildcats, posting a three-run first inning to take the early 3-0 lead.

Ashley Monceaux put the Lady Bears on the board first with a single up the middle to score Tiffany Wesley as Chelsi Lake followed with a two-run home run over the center field wall to give the Lady Bears a 3-0 lead. The home run was the third of the season for Lake as the senior now has 37 for her career, one shy of Kelly Osburn (38, 2003-06) for the all-time Baylor career lead.

After a scoreless second, Baylor posted two more runs in the third when Brette Reagan delivered a RBI single as Kelsey Sage followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 5-0.

Kentucky was unable to cut the lead in the following three innings as Baylor broke the game wide open with a four run sixth inning. Monceaux started the scoring outburst with a two-run single while Reagan added a two-run single of her own as the Lady Bears took a 9-0 lead and put the run rule into effect.

The Wildcats were unable to score in the bottom of the inning as Monceaux shut the Wildcats down in the frame to give Baylor the win and clinch the tournament title.

Lisa Ferguson had another solid outing for the Lady Bears in the win, allowing no runs on only one hit in four innings of work while striking out two as she moved to 3-0 on the season.

Jennifer Young took the loss for Kentucky and fell to 2-2 on the season after allowing five runs on seven hits in three innings of work.

Although Baylor had already sewn up the tournament title with a win in game one, the Lady Bears looked to complete a sweep of the Getterman Classic field when they faced Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the final game of the tournament.

The Lady Bears got off to a fast start, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Monceaux delivered a RBI double to score T. Wesley while Lake added a sacrifice fly to score Nicole Wesley from third for a 2-0 edge.

After adding a run in the second on N. Wesley's single to score T. Wesley, the rest was up to starting pitcher Kirsten Shortridge and the Baylor defense as the Lady Bears held the Islanders to one run the rest of the way to claim a 3-1 victory.

Shortridge picked up her second consecutive complete game victory, allowing only one run on four hits in seven innings of work as she moved to 2-0 on the season.

Jennifer Cummings took the loss for the Islanders, falling to 0-4 on the season after allowing three runs on eight hits in six innings of work.

T. Wesley led the way for Baylor in the win, going 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored while Shortridge added two hits in the win.

For the tournament, Baylor hit 11 home runs to establish a new Getterman Classic record as Lake and Monceaux led the way with three home runs each.

Baylor's Alex Colyer, Ferguson, Lake, Monceaux, Sage, Shortridge, N. Wesley and T. Wesley made the all-tournament team while Brooke Marnitz (Kentucky), Katie Campbell (Kentucky), Erica Armenta (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), Logan James (Southern Miss) and Jessica Tullos (Stephen. F. Austin) joined the Lady Bears on the squad.

Baylor will look to continue its winning ways as the Lady Bears host Sam Houston State for a doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 14, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
