Baylor All-American Zuzana Zemenova has been selected to participate in the main draw of the 2007 Riviera ITA All-American Championships while teammate Lenka Broosova will have a chance to reach the championships by participate in the qualifier.
Zemenova, ranked No. 6 by the ITA in pre-season singles, finished her 2006-07 campaign with a 22-8 record and was selected as an All-American for the third time. She was also named as a member of the First Team All-Big 12 and was named the Big 12 Player of the Year; both honors came for the third consecutive season. Zemenova received both awards after going 7-0 against Big 12 competition, making her career mark a perfect 27-0 against conference opponents.
In the fall of 2006, Zemenova competed in her first ITA All-American Championships, defeating UCLA's No. 28 Riza Zalameda before falling in the second round. The 2005 NCAA Individual Champion, Zemenova will be making her second appearance at the event as an automatic qualifier.
"This is great for both our program and our athletes," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "ZZ (Zemenova) and Lenka (Broosova) are playing really well right now. This event brings together some of the finest competition in the nation and our girls are excited to be here."
Pre-qualifying for the ITA Championships began on Sept. 29 on the campus of UCLA with Stanford's Whitney Deason earning a spot in qualifying where she will face Broosova.
Broosova, ranked No. 54 in the pre-season polls, finished the 2006 season on a 16-match winning streak and captured a Big 12 individual title playing at No. 3 singles. In all, Broosova collected a 38-8 mark as a freshman while posting a perfect 11-0 record in Big 12 action.
Broosova's 11 wins in conference play matches Zemenova and Klara Zrustova, equaling the most conference matches won by an individual in a single season in Baylor history.
The event, one of three collegiate Grand Slam events, features some of the best individuals in the nation. The main draw is comprised of 24 at-large selections, eight players from the qualifying tournament, the returning champion, the ITA National Summer Championships champion, all returning ITA All-American's from the previous season and one regional representative. California's Suzi Babos won the singles title in 2006 after capturing the NCAA Individual Title in May of the same year.
Main draw action will begin on Oct. 4 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
