WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's golf "green" team captured the individual title at the seventh-annual Coca-Cola/MCC Invitational Tuesday at Bear Ridge Golf Club. The Bears shot 14-under par for a five-stroke victory over Odessa Community College.
Junior Matt Briggs (San Antonio, Texas) shot an opening-round 73, followed by a 1-under par 71 to finish at even-par 144. Briggs claimed the individual title on the first playoff hole.
Junior Brian Meck (Austin, Texas) tied for third at 146, shooting an opening-round 70 and a 76. Redshirt freshmen Weldon Martin (Houston, Texas) and Jeff Gerlich (Austin, Texas) tied for fifth at 147. Martin shot 75 and 72, while Gerlich shot 73 and 74. Sophomore Carmine Mediate (Southlake, Texas) tied for 23rd at 157 with rounds of 72 and 85.
The tournament was scored in a different fashion than most collegiate tournaments, with the top four scores on each hole counting toward the team total, instead of each round as a whole.
