OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Baylor senior left fielder Seth Fortenberry and freshman shortstop Beamer Weems were named All-Big 12 Conference Tournament, the league office announced Sunday. The Bears finished 1-2 in Division 1 of pool play, falling to 15th-ranked Nebraska and sixth-ranked Texas, while defeating Texas Tech.
Fortenberry, a product of Midway High School in Waco, Texas, was 5-for-11 (.455) on the week with a triple, two home runs, 13 total bases and four RBI. He posted a 1.182 slugging percentage and a .600 on base percentage as he drew two walks and was hit twice. Fortenberry scored four runs and swiped one base.
Weems, a product of Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, Va., was 5-for-9 (.556) on the week with two doubles, three home runs, 16 total bases and six RBI. He posted a 1.778 slugging percentage and a .667 on base percentage, walking three times. Weems established a Baylor Big 12 Tournament record for home runs and tied David Murphy's school career mark.
Junior center fielder Chase Gerdes, a product of Uvalde [Texas] High School, also had a strong tournament, going 5-for-9 (.556) with a double, four runs, three walks and one RBI. Senior third baseman Kevin Russo, a Boulder, Colo., native who came to Baylor by way of San Jacinto Junior College, was 4-for-12 (.333) with two RBI and played an errorless tournament at the hot corner.
Baylor awaits word from the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee. Bids to the 2006 tournament will be announced Monday at 11:30 a.m. CDT on ESPN.
