WACO, Texas - The No. 18 Baylor softball team scored single runs in the third and the fourth innings and held on to defeat Kansas, 2-1, to earn the series split in action at Getterman Stadium on Sunday. With the split, Baylor improves to 25-15, 5-3 in conference play as Kansas falls to 21-19, 2-5 in Big 12 play with the loss.
After a scoreless first two innings, Tessa Lynam put the Lady Bears on top as she led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run down the left field line, her eighth of the season, to give Baylor a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bears extended the lead to two runs in the fourth as Brette Reagan scored on a double by Chelsi Lake as Baylor claimed a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth.
Kansas tried to mount a rally in the seventh as the Jayhawks placed runners at second and third with only one out. After a sacrifice fly made the score 2-1, Baylor reliever Lisa Ferguson forced Nicole Washburn into a fly out to right as the Lady Bears claimed the one-run victory.
Baylor starter Ashley Monceaux shined in the circle for the Lady Bears as the junior right-hander picked up the win after allowing one unearned run and only two hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Ferguson picked up her third save of the season and 14th of her career after retiring the final two outs of the seventh.
Serena Settlemier took the loss for Kansas and fell to 12-5 on the season after allowing two runs on two hits in four innings of work.
