Box Score
WACO, Texas - Ashley Monceaux opened with three perfect innings while freshman Brittany Turner came into the game in relief and tossed four, hitless innings as the No. 18 Baylor softball team no-hit Northwestern State and picked up a 5-0 victory over the Demons in action at Getterman Stadium. With the win, Baylor improves to 27-16 on the season while Northwestern State falls to 16-30 with the loss.
Senior Harmony Schwethelm would give Baylor all the scoring it would need in the bottom of the first inning as she delivered a RBI single up the middle, scoring Kelly Osburn from first, as the Lady Bears grabbed a quick one-run lead. Junior Chelsi Lake extended the lead to three runs in the inning when she knocked in two with a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Schwethelm and Brette Reagan as Baylor grabbed a commanding 3-0 lead.
Baylor made the score 5-0 in the second with a pair of runs as Osburn drove in Tessa Lynam with a single while Schwethelm added a sacrifice fly, her second RBI of the game, to score Miriam Romero to give the Lady Bears a five-run cushion.
The lead was more than enough for Monceaux and Turner to hold on to as the duo cruised through the Nortwestern State line-up inning after inning. After Monceaux pitched three perfect innings, Turner would allow only one base-runner the rest of the way with a walk in fifth inning. The freshman, right-hander would retire the next eight batters to preserve the no-hitter as Margaret Patterson grounded out to catcher Alex Colyer with two outs in the seventh to finish off the 11th no-hitter in school history.
Monceaux and Turner combined for the first no-hitter since Cristin Vitek no-hit Kansas in a seven-inning victory on March 27, 2004.
The combined no-hitter marked the first combined no-no since Vitek and Katie Decker combined to allow no hits in a five-inning victory over Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 22, 2002.
Turner was officially credited with the victory after tossing four innings of hitless relief as the freshman struck out four while improving to 4-4 on the season.
Amanda Glenn took the loss for Northwestern State after allowing five runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work as she fell to 8-19 on the season.
Schwethelm and Lake led the way for Baylor with two RBI each as Osburn added two hits, a run scored and a RBI in the victory.
