WACO, Texas --- The No. 18 Baylor softball team won a pair of wild games over Houston in action at Getterman Stadium on Wednesday, defeating the Cougars, 2-0, in game one before rallying for an 8-6 victory in game two. With the wins, Baylor improves to 18-6 on the season as Houston falls to 18-9 on the year.
Houston pitcher Candi Kloecker held the Baylor bats silent throughout game one; however, the Lady Bears managed to scrap for a run in the fifth to take the lead before adding an insurance run in the sixth for the 2-0 victory.
With Kloecker tossing a perfect game heading into the fifth inning, Baylor finally got a runner on board when Chelsi Lake reached on a fielding error by the pitcher. After pinch-runner Alex Colyer stole second and advanced to third, Ashley Monceaux drove her in with a sacrifice fly down the left field line to give the Lady Bears a 1-0 lead.
Baylor would add an insurance run in the sixth when Brette Reagan singled home Miriam Romero as the Lady Bears would take a 2-0 lead heading into the seventh.
Lisa Ferguson closed the door on the Cougars in the frame as the junior right-hander tossed her fourth complete-game shutout of the season, 15th of her career, after allowing only six hits in seven innings of work as she improved to 9-2 on the season.
In game two of the night, Baylor won a wild contest as the Lady Bears four-run sixth propelled them to an 8-6 win.
Baylor jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Tessa Lynam drove in Harmony Schwethelm to give the Lady Bears the early one-run advantage.
After Houston tied the game with a run in the second, Baylor seemingly grabbed control of the game with a three-run fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Jordan Daniels delivered a RBI ground out as two other runners scored on a fielding error by the Cougars catcher as Baylor took a three-run lead heading into the sixth.
The Cougars quickly answered; however, as Houston scored five runs in the frame, three unearned, to take a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the inning. Brooke Johnson and Angel Shamblin recorded two-run singles in the frame as Baylor was forced to rally in the bottom of the inning.
Baylor responded to the Cougar outburst with a four-run sixth as the first four Lady Bear batters reached base and eventually came around to score to give BU an 8-6 lead. Lynam provided the key hit in the inning with a two-run double as Reagan and Daniels also added RBI in the frame as Baylor re-claimed a two-run lead.
Lynam prevented the Cougars from responding in the seventh as the senior right-hander picked up her fourth win of the season after allowing two unearned runs and three hits in 1.2 innings of work.
Four Baylor players recorded two hits apiece in the contest as Lynam led the way with three RBI for the Lady Bears. Harmony Schwethelm added two runs in the game as every Baylor player in the line-up recorded a hit in the contest.
Kloecker took the loss for Houston after allowing three earned runs on four hits in 0.1 innings of work and fell to 7-4 on the season after suffering both losses on the night.
Baylor will return to action on Friday, March 10, in Tucson, Ariz., when the Lady Bears open a three-game series against No. 1 Arizona at 8:00 p.m.
