WACO, Texas - Lisa Ferguson's second consecutive shutout propelled the No. 19 Baylor softball team to a 4-0 win over Texas Tech as the Lady Bears picked up the weekend sweep over the Red Raiders with a victory on Sunday. With the win, Baylor improves to 20-13 on the year, 2-1 in the Big 12 Conference, as Texas Tech falls to 11-21, 0-2 in Big 12 play.
The starting pitchers controlled the game throughout as neither team managed to get a hit through the first five innings. Baylor scratched across a run in the fifth; however, as Jordan Daniels stole third and scored on the throwing error by Texas Tech catcher Robyn Wike as the Lady Bears grabbed a 1-0 lead.
After Baylor collected its first hit in the contest in the sixth, Chelsi Lake put the game away for the Lady Bears as she blasted a three-run, one-out home run well over the center field wall, scoring Harmony Schwethelm and Brette Reagan, to give BU a 4-0 lead.
The home run was the seventh of the season for Lake and the 23rd of her career, moving the junior into second-place on the Baylor career list.
Ferguson carried a no-hitter into the seventh; however, Texas Tech pinch-hitter Montana Patin led off the inning with a single to break-up the junior's quest for a second career no-no. The right-hander managed to record her second shutout of the weekend; however, as Alex Watkins grounded out to short to end the contest.
The shutout was the sixth of the season for Ferguson and the 17th of her career as the junior allowed only two hits and struck out four in seven innings of work as she improved to 11-7 on the season.
Julie Hauck took the loss for Texas Tech to fall to 5-7 on the season after allowing four runs on three hits in six innings of work.
Baylor will hit the road for the first time in Big 12 Conference play when the Lady Bears travel to Austin, Texas, to take on Texas at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29.
