Nov. 7, 2006

WACO, Texas -- Baylor baseball ranked 16th nationally in average home attendance and 18th nationally in total home attendance during the 2006 season, according to official numbers released by the NCAA. This marks the seventh consecutive season in which Baylor has ranked 21st or better nationally in both average and total attendance.

In 32 home dates, Baylor drew a total attendance of 96,427 to top the 90,000-plateau for the third consecutive season and the fifth time in Baylor Ballpark's seven full seasons. The Bears' per-game average of 3,013 ranked third in school history as Baylor averaged 3,000-plus fans per game for the third time in the last four seasons. Baylor has ranked 19th or better in each of the facility's seven full seasons, including five seasons of 16th or better.

Baylor was the fourth highest-ranked Big 12 school in both average attendance and total attendance behind only Texas (5,380, 4th; 161,392, 8th), Nebraska (5,092, 5th; 122,216, 14th) and Texas A&M (4,478, 9th; 138,805; 10th). Baylor ranked second nationally in average attendance among private institutions, trailing only Rice (4,193; 11th).

Six of the top 21 schools in average attendance were in the state of Texas as Houston ranked 19th (2,733) and Texas Tech ranked 21st (2,606) to join Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M and Rice.

Louisiana State's Alex Box Stadium led the nation in average attendance for the 11th consecutive season as the Tigers averaged 7,320 over 36 dates.

In 2001, only six schools nationally averaged at least 3,000 fans per game. Five years later, 16 schools reached the 3,000 mark.

Baylor begins its 2007 season Feb. 9-11 at the Minute Maid Park College Classic in Houston. The Bears finished 37-26 last season, advancing to an NCAA Regional championship game for the fifth time in six seasons.
