Baylor's equestrian team came from behind on Saturday and avenged an earlier loss it suffered two weeks ago by defeating the Oklahoma State Cowgirls 11-9 at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. The Cowgirls, making their first trip to Waco, defeated the Bears 17-7 two weeks ago in Stillwater, Okla. Baylor's head-to-head show record now stands at 3-1.
For Baylor, Nicole Brown earned MVP honors in Equitation Over Fences and Amanda Graber was the MVP in Western Horsemanship.
After the two western events, Oklahoma State held a 6-4 lead, winning three points in horsemanship and three in reining. The Bears garnered four points with Lindsey Tomko earning high point rider honors in horsemanship with 73.5 and Graber adding another point by tallying 73. Madelyn Mooney (68.5) added another point in reining and Valtie Riddle also scored one for BU with her 69.5 mark.
Baylor closed the gap a little by posting a 3-2 edge in Equitation on the Flat with Cara Wilson and Shelby White sharing the event's high point honors with 94 each. Mary Smitson added another point with her 63 for the Bears. That made the score 8-7 Oklahoma State going into Equitation Over Fences competition.
Baylor, showing its dominance in equitation events, out-scored the Cowgirls 4-1 in Equitation Over Fences to push the Bears to victory. Brown, posted the event's highest score at 85. Shelby White (72), Susie Foster (83) and Smitson (63) also scored points the Bears.
In exhibition action, where scores do not count toward the official final scores and the riders ride strictly for competitive practice, Baylor picked up six points to OSU's three. Baylor garnered three points in Equitation Over Fences, one in Equitation on the Flat and two in Western Horsemanship. Western reining was not contested.
"We were very ready to compete today," said head coach Ellen White. "We were very pleased with the horses today, especially since we were using new fences. They weren't used to them but they adjusted well. We have a strong English team and our riders in fences were especially strong today."
Baylor will compete in its final show of the fall when they travel to College Station, Texas, on Nov. 12 to take on Texas A&M at 12 p.m.
