PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Baylor's Zuzana Cerna and Zuzana Zemenova both fell Friday morning at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The pair of losses came in the tournament main draw's round of 16.
No. 4 Zemenova battled No. 72 Shadisha Robinson from South Florida, a former Georgia Bulldog who was the nation's top netter in 2002. The two met previously in the 2004-05 season when Robinson defeated Zemenova the first time. Friday's match was settled in straight sets as Shadisha bested Baylor's junior 6-1, 6-3.
No. 14 Cerna took the court looking for an upset over No. 1 Audra Cohen. The Miami sophomore posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Baylor's senior.
"Unfortunately we didn't execute at the level necessary to win. At the same time, [Audra] Cohen and Shadisha [Robinson] played very well and were on top of their games," said head coach Joey Scrivano.
Despite two eliminations, Baylor continues tennis action this weekend at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas. Iva Mihaylova defeated Prairie View A&M's Marika Dawkins 6-1, 6-1 in the Blue singles bracket while Zuzana Chmelarova fell to Georgia Tech's Amanda McDowell 6-2, 7-5. In the Gray singles draw, Jana Bielikova defeated Christy Striplin from Georgia Tech 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles action, Mihaylova and Chmelarova picked a win over Illinois' Shivani Dave and Alejandra Cuadra 8-3 in the Blue doubles draw. Bielikova paired with Lee College's Stephanie Rodriguez but they were defeated by Prairie View A&M's duo Camille Whittingham and Bianca Simpson.
The three Bears in Houston have afternoon matches; the results will be posted at baylorbears.com as soon as they are available.
