WACO, Texas-The top-seeded Baylor baseball team jumped out to an early 7-0 lead over second-seeded TCU and never looked back as the Bears advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Waco Regional with an 8-3 win over the Horned Frogs in action at Baylor Ballpark.
With the win, Baylor improved to 41-21 on the season and advances to the championship game to face the winner of TCU-Stanford at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 6.
TCU falls to 41-19 on the season with the loss and will face Stanford in an elimination game at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 5.
The Bears got on the board early with a run in the first inning. After Chase Gerdes singled and stole second, Josh Ford brought Gerdes home with a single up the middle to give Baylor a 1-0 lead.
Baylor added three runs in the second and third innings to give the Bears a commanding 7-0 lead. In the second, Paul Witt hit a run-scoring single as Gerdes added a two-run single with two outs as Baylor grabbed a 4-0 lead.
Gerded added another two-run single in the third, scoring Witt and Jeff Mandel as Baylor took a seven-run lead into the fourth.
TCU managed two runs in the fifth as Matt Carpenter scored on a fielder's choice and Chad Huffman added a RBI single; however, Baylor managed a run in the sixth to push the lead back up to six.
The Horned Frogs managed a run in the seventh; but, it was not enough as the Bears went on to claim an 8-3 win.
Abe Woody came into the game in relief of Baylor starter Mark McCormick and allowed only one run on five hits in 4.1 innings of work as he improved to 9-3 on the season with the win.
Sam Demel took the loss for TCU and fell to 5-5 on the season after allowing seven runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of work.
Gerdes led the Baylor attack, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI.
Huffman was 4-for-5 with a RBI for TCU in the loss.
