For the second time in program history Baylor's women's tennis team advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships. The 15th-seeded Baylor squad will now take on the tournament's No. 2 seed, Florida.
Baylor, the tournament's No. 15 seed and Big 12 Conference champions, enters the NCAA Round of 16 with a program-best 24-5 record and is ranked No. 14 in the most recent ITA poll. Florida is 20-2 on the season and currently ranked No. 2 in the most recent ITA rankings. Baylor advanced with wins over Niagara (4-0) and BYU (4-1) in the regional hosted by BYU. Florida posted victories over South Carolina State (4-0) and Florida International (4-0) to move to the round of 16.
Thursday will be the first-ever match between Florida and Baylor. However, the two schools took to the courts in Gainesville on January 22nd, but rain forced the cancellation of the match after the Gators had won the doubles point, winning at all three positions.
Baylor Notes...
-All but six of the Lady Bears' matches have been against teams ranked in the top 75 nationally. In fact, 15 of their matches have been against teams ranked in the top 50.
-BU won its second Big 12 title in 2005, the team shared championship honors with Texas A&M in 2003.
-Baylor posted its first-ever undefeated Big 12 season with an 11-0 mark.
- For the first time in school history, five players have posted 20-win seasons: Klara Zrustova (26), Zuzana Krchnakova (25), Zuzana Zemenova (23), Zuzana Cerna (22) and Daniela Covello (22). In addition, Iva Mihaylova is only one victory away from reaching the 20-win mark.
- BU has blanked nine teams this season.
- BU has swept Nos. 3-6 singles 11 times this season.
- In singles since February, BU is 23-2 at No. 1, 14-8 at No. 2, 22-6 at No. 3, 23-3 at No. 4, 22-5 at No. 5 and 19-3 at No. 6.
- BU set a record for most team wins in a season with 24, the previous high was 23, set in the 2000 and 2001 seasons.
- Junior Daniela Covello tied a BU record for most doubles wins in a season with 28.
- Freshman Zuzana Cerna ranks No. 8 on BU's doubles wins in a season list with 22.
Head Coach Joey Scrivano...
Baylor Head Coach Joey Scrivano is in his third season at the helm of the women's tennis program, he guided the team to its first-ever Big 12 championship in 2003 and the squad repeated in 2005 by winning sole possession of the title with its first undefeated league record. He has a career record of 108-47 which includes his three year stint at the University of South Alabama (60-18). While at South Alabama he led the program to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances in three years including a quarterfinals finish in 2000. Scrivano has now guided teams to five NCAA Tournaments in six seasons.
