KANEHOE, H.I. - The Baylor men's golf team shot a two-over-par 290 and are in third place after the first round of the University of Hawaii Fall Invitational at the Kanehoe Klipper G.C. The Bears are only seven shots behind overall leader New Mexico State heading into the second round scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Senior Ryan Baca (Richmond, Texas), leads the way for the Bears after firing an opening round four-under-par 68. Baca is currently tied for third and only two shots back after shooting three-under-par 33 on the back nine.
Freshman Carmine Mediate (Soulake, Texas), who is competing in his second career tournament, is tied for eighth after opening play with a one-under-par 71. Junior Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas) shot a first round 75 and is in a tie for 30th, while junior Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) opened the tournament with a 76. Sophomore Wes Williams (Franklin, Tenn.) shot a first round score of 79, while junior Colton Turnquist (Austin, Texas) shot a one-over-par 73 and is tied for 17th competing as an individual.
New Mexico State leads the tournament by three shots over second place UNLV. Baylor is four shots behind them while San Diego State currently is two shots behind the Bears. Host University of Hawaii is in fifth place after opening with a 293.
The Bears will get right back into action Tuesday morning with the second round and then will complete play with a final round on Wednesday morning.
