Nov. 3, 2005

WACO, Texas -- Baylor baseball head coach Steve Smith released his program's 2006 schedule Thursday. The 56-game regular-season slate features 34 home games and only 12 games outside the state of Texas. A highlight of Baylor's schedule is the inaugural Quala-T Imprints Baylor Classic, held March 10-12 at Baylor Ballpark.

Another highlight of the 2006 season is Baylor Pro-Alumni Weekend, held Feb. 4-5, as Baylor welcomes back former Baylor lettermen, including 25 current professional players. Included in the weekend's festivities will be a game between Baylor's active pro alumni and the 2006 squad.

Season ticket renewals will be accepted in early December. New season ticket orders will be accepted in early January. Contact the Baylor Ticket Office at 254.710.1000 or 1.800.BAYLOR.U ext. 7 for more information.

The 2006 season officially begins Feb. 10-12 as the Bears host Stephen F. Austin for a weekend series. Other non-conference weekend series for the Bears are home sets against California and Arizona State, and a three-game series at Long Beach State. Baylor welcomes Louisiana Tech, Michigan and Pacific to Waco for the Quala-T Imprints Baylor Classic. The Bears play their first 11 games and 18 of their first 24 at Baylor Ballpark.

"This is a challenging schedule, but one I know our players look forward to playing and one that our fans should enjoy, as well," Smith said. "With so many home games early in the schedule, it is my hope this will give our younger players a chance to mature in a familiar environment. As usual, our early non-conference schedule should give us a great opportunity to get ready for another challenging Big 12 season."

Baylor hosts Kansas to open conference action March 17-18. Oklahoma State (April 7-9) and Nebraska (May 12-14) also visit Baylor Ballpark. The Bears also face Texas and Texas A&M in the annual split series; however, this year's Texas series will be played Thursday through Saturday (April 13-15) to accommodate for Easter weekend. Baylor gets the Thursday game against Texas and the Saturday and Sunday games against Texas A&M (April 21-23) at home this season.

Last season, Baylor's strength of schedule ranked seventh nationally; the Bears were the only team in the top 10 not from the state of California. Baylor's strength of schedule has ranked 11th or better nationally in each of the past five seasons, ranking 11th in 2004, fifth in 2003, seventh in 2002 and 10th in 2001.

The Bears return 14 lettermen, four starters and seven pitchers from a 2005 squad that finished 46-24, ranked fourth nationally, claimed a share of the Big 12 title and reached the national semifinals at the College World Series.
