WACO, Texas - Cristin Vitek's sixth shutout of the season halted a two-game losing skid for No. 20 Baylor as the Lady Bears defeated Texas Tech 4-0 in softball action at Getterman Stadium. With the win, Baylor improves to 36-9 on the season and 6-2 in Big 12 play. With the loss, Texas Tech falls to 19-23 on the year and 1-4 in the conference.
The Lady Bears provided Vitek with all the run support she would need with a single run in the third inning. Following a Kelly Osburn double to right-center field, Kim Wilmoth singled up the middle with two outs to score Osburn and give Baylor the early 1-0 lead.
Baylor extended the lead to two runs with another run in the fourth. With two outs, Stephanie Pomes reached on a throwing error by Texas Tech shortstop Heather Parker, allowing Amber Daniel to score to give the Lady Bears a 2-0 lead.
Baylor added two insurance runs in the sixth for a four run lead heading into the final inning. With runners on second and third and two outs, a wild pitch by Texas Tech starter Erin Crawford allowed Carrie Leerberg to score as April Luce followed with a single to left to score Kylie Conroy for the Lady Bears final run.
Vitek (21-4) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning to seal the victory as the Lady Bears improved to 24-7 all-time against the Red Raiders. Vitek struck out 10-plus batters for the tenth time in her career, striking out 11 Texas Tech batters on her way to her 12th complete game of the season.
Baylor will look to complete the two-game series sweep when the two teams conclude the series on Saturday, April 10, at 1:00 p.m. Following the game, the Lady Bears will host an Easter Egg Hunt for children 14 and under.
