Softball Posts Pair of Shutouts Against McNeese State

Waco, Texas - The Baylor Lady Bears softball team took the field for the first time this season as a nationally-ranked squad and cruised to a pair of victories over McNeese State in action at Cowgirl Field today. Baylor completed the sweep with a pair of shutouts, winning game one by a score of 8-0 and defeating the Cowgirls 7-0 in game two.
With the wins, Baylor moves to 28-6 on the year.
The Lady Bears jumped on the Cowgirls early in game one, scoring five runs in the first inning to give starting pitcher Cristin Vitek a huge cushion.
Baylor added a run in the fourth and two more in the seventh to put the Cowgirls away.
A balanced Lady Bears attack kept the pressure on the Cowgirls, as six Baylor players recorded hits in he game, with Kim Wilmoth, Melissa Maler and Carrie Leerberg leading the way with two hits apiece.
Maler, April Luce and Kelly Osburn added two RBI each in the victory.
The output was more than enough for Vitek, who recorded her fourth complete-game shutout of the season, allowing only three hits while striking out nine Cowgirl batters. With the win, Vitek moved her record to 17-3 on the season.
In game two, the Lady Bears scored seven runs on nine hits, and with the help of another shutout by Lisa Ferguson, defeated the Cowgirls 7-0.
After a scoreless first three innings, the Lady Bears used a two-run fourth inning and a five-run sixth to take home the 7-0 victory.
Harmony Schwethelm, Danelle Arnold and Leerberg led the Baylor attack at the plate, each recording two hits in the game. Kelly Levesque also added a two-run single for the Lady Bears in the victory.
Ferguson recorded her sixth shutout of the season, holding the Cowgirls to only five hits while striking out three.
On the day, the Lady Bears were a perfect 12 for 12 in stolen bases, pushing their season total to 83 swipes on the year. Baylor opponents have only stolen six bases so far this season.
No. 22 Baylor will return to action on Wednesday, March 24, when the Lady Bears host Texas-Arlington at 6:00 p.m. at Getterman Stadium.
