Lady Bears Drop Two at Cougar Invitational

Houston, Texas-The Baylor Lady Bears dropped a pair of one-run decisions in action at the Cougar Invitational today, falling to Texas A&M Corpus-Christi 3-2 and to the host, Houston, 2-1 in the late game. With the defeats, the Lady Bears fall to 5-3 on the season.

In the first game of the day, Baylor managed to jump out to a 2-0 lead on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's number one pitcher, Sarah Pauly. In the third inning, a Kim Wilmoth double to left field scored Kelly Osburn to give Baylor an early 1-0 lead.

A perfectly executed suicide squeeze made the score 2-0 in the fifth. As Carrie Leerberg broke for home, Osburn laid down a perfect bunt that allowed Leerberg to slide under the tag.

The Lady Bears were unable to hold onto the; however, as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi responded with two runs in the top of the sixth. With two outs, after a runner earlier in the inning reached on an error, Jennifer Golden belted a two run home run over the right field fence to tie the score.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi would take the lead the next inning, as Shana Washington scored on a wild pitch to take a 3-2 lead as the Highlanders retired the Lady Bears in order in the bottom of the inning for the victory.

The loss dampened an outstanding performance by Baylor starting pitcher Cristin Vitek. Vitek allowed only two hits and no earned runs on her way to a no decision. In the process, she struck out 12 batters in 6.1 innings of work, tied for fourth most in school history.

Tessa Lynam (0-1) took the loss for Baylor, allowing one unearned run in 0.2 innings of relief work.

Pauly, who allowed three hits and two unearned runs, picked up the victory for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

In the second game, errors cost the Lady Bears the victory as Houston scored two runs in the third inning, with all three errors playing a role in the Cougars two runs.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kelly Levesque singled to score Lynam, Baylor was unable to score again as Houston won the game in the third.

The Cougars' Lindsay Durham scored when the throw to home pulled catcher Melissa Maler off the bag to tie the score at 1-1. The next batter, Kristen Glowacz, gave Houston the lead for good when her sacrifice fly to left field scored Jaci Gonzalez for a 2-1 lead.

Baylor mounted a pair of threats in the final innings; however, was unable to capitalize and fell for the second time on the day.

Although Lisa Ferguson (0-1) took the loss for Baylor, she had another outstanding outing for Baylor, as she allowed only one hit while tossing a complete game.

Jamie Falco, who allowed four hits and one run, picked up the win for Houston. Jenny Johnson earned a save after 2.1 innings of shutout relief work.

Baylor will return to action at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, February 15, when they face Sam Houston State on the final day of the Cougar Classic. The Lady Bears will then conclude the tournament by finishing the suspended game with Louisiana-Monroe at 2:00 p.m.

Baylor currently holds a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning against ULM.
