2003 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Tournament
Game 15: Baylor vs. Texas
Baylor Head Coach Steve Smith
Opening Statement
" First of all I would like to thank all of you for recognizing the efforts of the guys you voted on the All-Tournament Team, particularly the pitchers. I thought what Steven White did today was pretty remarkable and obviously very crucial for us even having a chance."
"There were probably three plays that they made defensively, two made by Street and the one that Farin ran down in center, there are a bunch of runs in those plays. Everybody who fought in the game, hitters, defenders, and pitchers did their job. There is much of the game that is random. I think it was Griffin that grounded out to Street at third base, and that was a pretty big play."
"I am very pleased at how our guys turned around after finishing up out here at 1:30 in the morning. They came out and really played with some fire."
Baylor right fielder David Murphy
" It has been extremely impressive, we had a tough weekend last weekend against Nebraska and they beat up on us the first game here and to come back and beat them twice yesterday was huge. We were low on pitching and we came out and fought hard and came out with two wins yesterday. Today was a dogfight and I am just extremely impressed with our team and the heart we have shown."
Texas Head Coach Augie Garrido
On repeating as tournament champs
" I think it is good for our players. We battled hard and this is the place where we found confidence level last year. I hope it will have the same effect on us. We found some pitching in [Sam] LeCure and J. Brent Cox, it was outstanding. This tournament shows the quality of the league."
On Curtis Thigpen being a hero
There are heroes on both teams. It was a hard fought battle, a well fought battle and there was a lot of good sportsmanship included. It speaks well for the Big 12. The quality of the tournament was outstanding."
Texas shortstop Omar Quintanilla
This year's championships compared to last year's " It feels great. We are just getting started.
Texas right fielder Dustin Majewski
On Texas' run in the tournament
This is a great feeling. We had to work so much harder this year. We had everything going against us the whole tournament. We got behind today, we got behind yesterday and we had to come back and beat A&M. This is where it starts now, we have a regional to look forward to."
