Men's Golfers Conclude Season At NCAA Central Regional

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Baylor men's golf team rebounded in the final round of the NCAA Central Regional at the 72-par, 7,228-yard Colbert Hills Golf Club in Manhattan, Kan., but it was not enough to improve in the team standings.

The Bears opened with a round of 289, but struggled on the second 18 holes, carding a 313. The squad rebounded today to close out the season with a 291, but the Bears remained in 27th place with a tournament total of 893.

The top 10 teams advance to the NCAA Championships. They were Oklahoma State (856), Illinois (861), North Carolina State (862), North Carolina and Texas (867), Kentucky (869), SMU, Minnesota and Arkansas (870) and Wichita State (871).

Sophomore Ryan Baca fired his second below-par round of the tournament. With a final round of 71, he tied for 33rd with a tournament total of 217 (70-76-71). Junior Jon Antunes shot a final round of 77 to tie for 102nd (72-77-77). Freshman Will McDonald (75-78-74) and senior Trevar Matheson (73-82-72) tied for 109th, compiling tournament totals of 227. Junior Will Doughtie finished the tournament with a total of 230 (74-82-74) to tie for 121st.

Houston's Brett Callas was the individual medallist with a three-round total of 207 (74-82-74).

The Bears finish the 2002-03 campaign having earned a regional bid for the sixth-consecutive year. They also brought home one tournament victory during the season.
