WACO, Texas - Five Baylor players participated in the University of Houston-hosted Cougar Tennis Fall Classic. The tournament featured 10 flights of singles and five flights of doubles over three days with 14 schools participating.
Sophomore Stephanie Balzert, competing in the Flight A, finished play with a 2-1 mark which placed her third. Junior Daria Potapova also played in Flight A and finished fifth with a 2-1 mark. Balzert posted wins over North Texas' Kelly Royer (6-1, 6-2) and Ole Miss' Sabrina Peppl (6-3, 4-6, 7-6). Potapova defeated Lejla Porobic (New Mexico State), 6-0, 6-2 and Louisiana Tech's Saharai Uriarte (6-1, 6-0)
In Flight B, sophomore Zuzana Krchnakova captured second with a 2-1 mark and freshman Iva Mihaylova finished third, also at 2-1. Krchnakova beat Celine Vanweydeveld (UL-Lafayette), 6-1, 6-4 and Melanie Hall (Texas State) 6-2, 6-0, before falling to New Mexico State's Isabelle Mignot in the finals, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. In finishing third, Mihaylova downed Jitka Vetrovcoca (UTA) 6-3, 6-4 and Melanie Hall (Texas State) 6-1, 7-6.
In Flight C, Izabela Mijic placed third with a 2-1 singles record. She defeated Louisiana Tech's Andrea Moncada, 6-0, 7-6 (2) and Karen Choa of Rice, 7-6, 7-6.
In Flight A doubles action, Potapova and Balzert teamed to finish third and Mijic and Mihaylova were fifth. Krchnakova paired with Lakann Wagley of Texas Tech to win the Flight C title.
Baylor's next action will be at the ITA Southwest Regional Tournament, Oct. 19-22 in Fort Worth.
