WACO, Texas - Baylor baseball co-captain Tim Hartshorn, who concluded his eligibility this spring, has been selected as one of 29 spring sport male athletes to receive an NCAA Postgraduate scholarship. The Long Beach, Calif., native was also one of 13 male athletes to earn the honor from the Big 12 Conference.
Hartshorn graduated in May with a bachelor's of science degree in biology with minors in German and chemistry. He plans to work in the microbiology lab at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco for the next year before beginning medical school.
One of only four Division I baseball players to receive the postgraduate scholarship this year, Hartshorn joins Frantisek Krepelka (Oklahoma State tennis), Steven Rowe (Texas Tech baseball) and Scott Russell (Kansas track and field) as the only honorees, male or female, from the Big 12.
In addition to the spring sport honorees, the NCAA also awards 116 postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes participating in fall and winter sports in which the NCAA conducts championships, for a total of 174 postgraduate scholarships annually.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.
This is the second consecutive year in which a Baylor athlete has received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Tennis standout Mark Williams was so honored last year.
