WACO, Texas - Baylor third baseman Michael Griffin was named honorable mention on Collegiate Baseball's 2002 Freshman All-America Team, the publication announced Wednesday.
Griffin, a true freshman, hit .282 in his first season as a Bear with seven home runs and 50 RBI. The rookie from Dallas, Texas, ranked among the Big 12 Conference leaders in RBI for much of the season and finished the year second on the team in that category. His seven homers were also the second-best total on the team and were the most by a Baylor freshman since Matt Williams hit nine in 1998.
Wednesday's announcement made Griffin the seventh freshman all-American in team history, joining Jeremy Dodson and Jon Topolski (1996), Jason Jennings (1997), Josh Scott (1998), Zane Carlson and Mike Huggins (2000). Carlson was the National Freshman of the Year in 2000.
