COLUMBUS, Ohio -
The 20th ranked Baylor men's golf team shot a three-over 289 Thursday to move up one spot to 23rd after two rounds of the 2002 NCAA Men's Golf Championships at The Ohio State University Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
Baylor, making its first appearance in the NCAA Finals, is currently 13-over-par at 581 through two rounds, 18 strokes behind leaders Clemson and Georgia Tech at five-under.
Leading the Bears individually are Ryan Baca and Adam Meyer, both tied for 54th among 156 golfers at two-over. Baca, a freshman from Richmond, Texas, birdied twice and shot a two-over 73 Thursday. Meyer, a sophomore from Waco, countered two bogies with three birdies to finish one-under in the second round and move up 54 spots in the standings.
Junior Jamie McLeary birdied three of the opening four holes Thursday, but finished with a one-over 72 and is tied at 94th at four-over through two rounds. Rounding out the scoring for the Bears was freshman Derek Abel, who carded a three-over 74 in Round Two and is tied at No. 119 at six-over for the tournament. Sophomore Will Doughtie shot a four-over 75 Thursday and is also tied at six-over.
The national championship continues Friday with an 11:45 CDT tee-time for the Bears, who will play alongside UAB and UNLV. The championship concludes with a final round Saturday at OSU's Scarlet Course, a par-71, 7,236-yard facility that was established in 1938.
Baylor is ranked No. 20 nationally in the latest Golfstat and Golfweek polls.
The Bears qualified for the championships with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Central Regional in Little Rock, Ark., May 18.
