WACO, Texas - Baylor junior first baseman Mike Huggins was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball Co-Player of the Week for games played April 22-28, the league announced Monday.
The honor is the second of the year for Huggins, and it is the fifth time a Baylor position player or pitcher has been honored by the conference this season. The Bears had four conference honorees during the first five weeks of the season (Tim Hartshorn, Jared Theodorakos, Huggins and Steven White).
Huggins, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, blasted four homers in four games and slugged 1.357 for the week as Baylor went 2-2 against Texas-Arlington and Kansas State. The four long balls doubled his season total to eight, vaulting Huggins into the team lead. His nine RBI on the week pushed him into a tie for the team lead in that category, as well; both totals rank among the best in the Big 12, as does Huggins' .360 average.
Wednesday against UTA, he had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI, including the go-ahead run in the Bears' half of the sixth that proved to be the game winner in a 7-5 win. Friday at K-State, Huggins homered twice, drove in three and scored three times in a 14-9 loss. He added two more homers and five RBI on Saturday but was again unable to power the Bears to a win as they dropped a 12-9 decision. The junior was held hitless on Sunday but walked three times (twice intentionally) and scored twice in a 6-5 win.
Huggins shared the honor with Kansas State third baseman Ty Soto, who hit .688 mark (11-for-16) on the week. He was 5-for-5 in Saturday's 12-9 victory over Baylor. The Wildcats' sophomore notched seven RBI, walked three times, had a slugging percentage of 1.000 and an on-base average of .875 in a 3-1 week for the Wildcats with two triumphs against the Bears.
Kansas senior Dan Olson and Nebraska sophomore Aaron Marsden were chosen as Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball Co-Pitchers of the Week.
The 15th-ranked Bears take this week off from conference play before the students begin finals next week. Baylor hosts UTA Tuesday at 6 p.m., then welcomes Dallas Baptist to town for a single game Friday night and a doubleheader on Saturday.
