WACO, Texas - Baylor baseball coach Steve Smith announced Monday the signing of one additional player for the 2003 season, bringing the team's total to 13 signees.
Blake Womble, an outfielder/second baseman, signed with the Bears this spring out of Robert E. Lee High School in Tyler, Texas, where he played for head coach Mike Pirtle. A two-sport letterwinner, Womble also played football at Lee. He has twice earned first-team all-district and All-East Texas honors as an outfielder. In 1999, Womble was named District 12-5A and All-East Texas Newcomer of the Year as a freshman. Last season, as a junior, he was honored as team MVP. On the gridiron, Womble has twice been recognized as Lee's Special Team Player of the Year and earned all-district honors in 2000 and 2002. He has spent two years as a member of the National Honor Society and also participates in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The son of Randy and Rhonda Womble, Blake chose Baylor over Abilene Christian.
"We are very excited to have Blake join our program, he is a tremendous athlete with great speed," head coach Steve Smith said. "He was an outstanding receiver for the Tyler Lee football team. Blessed with tremendous speed, Blake is the fastest of our signees."
