WACO, Texas - Baylor's bats continued their torrid streak, pounding out 21 hits and 17 runs Wednesday night against visiting Winthrop in a 17-6 win at Baylor Ballpark.
Winthrop (8-6) was unable to convey the excitement from its game Tuesday night against Texas, a 2-1, 10-inning defeat to the 14th-ranked Longhorns, into a win Wednesday. The Eagles did jump out in front, 5-1, after two-and-a-half innings, but the No. 14 Bears (10-5) scored 11 unanswered runs in the middle innings to ice the game.
The Baylor offense was led by red-hot Mike Huggins, who went 4-for-4 with a home run and a walk against Winthrop and is hitting .519 (14-for-27) in a seven-game hitting streak. Huggins drove in a pair of runs and scored four times.
A trio of other Bears finished with three hits each on the night: Trey Webb (3-for-6 with a double, two runs and an RBI), Michael Griffin (3-for-6 with two doubles, two runs and three RBI), and Josh Ford (3-for-4 with a double, one run and three RBI). Ross Bennett added a two-run home run in his only plate appearance after pinch-running in the seventh.
Winthrop took its early lead off Baylor starter Trey Taylor, who again struggled in his second start of the year. Taylor went 2 1/3 innings and gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits, with three walks and two strikeouts.
The Baylor bullpen, however, shut down the Eagle's attack, limiting the visitors to one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings. Freshman Sean Walker (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win, throwing four innings and striking out four batters while giving up just one earned run. Cody Hall and Jay Lockett followed Walker, shutting out Winthrop over the final 2 2/3 innings.
Starter Jeremy Plexico (2-1) took the loss for Winthrop after getting roughed up for 10 hits and seven runs (six earned) in 3 1/3 innings.
Baylor improved to 6-0 at home this season with the win, the Bears are 82-24 at Baylor Ballpark since the field's opening in 1999.
The Bears continue their homestand this weekend with a three-game set against eighth-ranked Nebraska. The series starts Friday night at 7 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
