WACO, Texas - Baylor outfielder Tim Hartshorn was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball Player of the Week for games played Jan. 25-Feb. 10, the league announced Monday.
Hartshorn, a senior from Long Beach, Calif., hit .667 (10-for-15) in three games at the Astros College Classic in Houston and claimed tournament Most Outstanding Player honors. Batting leadoff for the Bears in all three games, Hartshorn slugged 1.200 for the weekend with a double, two triples and a home run among his 10 hits. He scored four runs and drove in four more. In the season opener against No. 11 Rice, Hartshorn knocked out five hits, tying the Baylor record for hits in a game.
Texas Tech pitcher Chris Phillips was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week Phillips after becoming the first Big 12 pitcher to record two wins in 2002. He fired two complete games in a nine-inning performance at New Mexico and a 10-inning win over TCU 2-1 in the Astros College Classic. Phillips owns a 2.16 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 25 innings in his first three appearances.
The 25th-ranked Bears open their 2002 home season Wednesday against UT-San Antonio. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
