WACO, Texas - Baylor catcher Kelly Shoppach has been named to the 2001 USA Today Baseball Weekly All-America first team, which is detailed in the current issue of the publication.
Shoppach, a junior from Fort Worth, Texas, has been the Bears best hitter, batting over .400 for much of the season and ranking among the Big 12 leaders in batting average, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. Earlier in the season, Shoppach put together a 28-game hitting streak, which ranks second in both Baylor and Big 12 history.
A superb defensive catcher, Shoppach committed just one error in 375 chances for a .998 fielding percentage. He also threw out 12-of-23 would-be basestealers.
This is just the latest in a series of honors earned by Shoppach, who has already been named Big 12 Player of the Year, first team all-Big 12, Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger first team all-America and ABCA all-Midwest Region.
