WACO, Texas - Baylor baseball catcher Kelly Shoppach and oufielder Chris Durbin were named to the 2001 ABCA Midwest All-Region first team as selected by the American Baseball Coaches Association and released Thursday.
The 28-member squad features players from 13 different schools, including Baylor sophomore pitcher Steven White, who was recognized on the second team.
Shoppach, a Fort Worth native, led the team with a .397 batting average. The all-American hit 12 home runs and had 69 RBI. Defensively, Shoppach was outstanding, committing just one error for a .998 fielding percentage.
Wylie, Texas, native Chris Durbin hit .358 with 57 RBI as the Bears regular starter at center field. The sophomore also led the team in home runs with 14.
White, who is from League City, Texas, posted a 10-3 record and a 3.49 ERA in 98 innings of work. He started 15 games and notched 80 strikeouts.
Baylor, which finished 37-24 on the season, capped off the year with a trip to a fourth straight NCAA regional tournament.
