STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Baylor women's tennis' Jahnavi Parekh and Katja Kovac refuse to go home.
The pair, ranked 21st in the nation, won their quarterfinal match Thursday to advance to the NCAA Doubles Championship semifinals. The Bears beat 29th-ranked Caroline Mayorga and Sarah Witten of Kentucky in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-3.
"This was a very, very solid doubles match," Baylor head coach Dave Luedtke said. "Kovac served great, I don't think she lost a serve the whole match. Parekh struggled with her serve, but did just about everything else right.
"They had very good court awareness today, probably the best I've seen of these two girls in their time at Baylor. They made the right shot 99.9 percent of the time. And they were consistent, when Kentucky tried to step up, our girls held them off and won the big games."
Kovac and Parekh have won eight straight matches, tying the school record for consecutive doubles wins., and boast a 18-3 record for the season. The pair of all-Americans are making the first appearance by a doubles team in Baylor history.
The Baylor team now advances to the semifinals Friday at 1 p.m. ET, where Kovac and Parekh will face the No. 2 team in the country in Stanford's Laura Granville and Gabriela Lastra. The Cardinal pair beat Baylor's team of Karin Andersson and Frida Borjesson 8-2 when the two schools met in February. The team of Granville and Lastra is Stanford's No. 2 team, the school's top duo is Lauren Barnikow and Lauren Kalvaria, the No. 1 team in the nation.
