STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Baylor women's tennis team of Jahnavi Parekh and Katja Kovac lost Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships, held at the Lincoln Tennis Center just outside Atlanta.
Kovac and Parekh, ranked 21st in the nation, lost in the semis to second-ranked Laura Granville and Gabriela Lastra, 6-1, 6-1.
"This match was closer than the score indicates," Baylor head coach Dave Luedtke said. "Stanford played well, as expected. We had some chances to close out some games, but we didn't do it."
The Bears had chances in the second and third games of the first set to close out games and stay in the match, but Stanford fought through to take the first set 6-1. In the second set, Baylor won the first game and again had chances to win the second and third games, but once more failed to close out the games.
"We needed to come out in the second set and really make a statement after losing the first set, and if we could have closed out the second and third games, we would have done just that. We just didn't capitalize on the big points."
Kovac and Parekh finshed the season with an 18-4 record, including a school-record-tying eight match win streak that come to an end with the loss Friday. The pair of all-Americans also wrote their names in the Baylor record book by earning the first NCAA Doubles selection in program history.
"I'm very proud of the girls," Luedtke said. "They had a great run, just a great season, capped off with an appearance in the NCAA semis. I'm very, very proud of them."
