STILLWATER, Okla. - After taking the first two games of the series, the 14th-ranked Baylor baseball team was unable to complete the sweep of Oklahoma State, losing 15-5 in seven innings Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Stadium.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 33-17 overall, 16-8 in Big 12 action. The Cowboys improve to 34-15 and 13-11.
Oklahoma State jumped on Baylor starter Kyle Edens (2-1) early, scoring three runs in the first when Paul Powell ripped a three-run homer over the left field wall. The Cowboys struck again with two runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead.
After a slow start, the Baylor offense got going with a pair of home runs in the fourth inning. Chris Durbin led off with a home run to left field and, two batters later, Ron Zboril followed with a bomb to the same spot.
OSU stretched the lead with two runs off Bears reliever Derek Brehm in the fourth, but Baylor fired back with three runs in the fifth to make the score 7-5. Mike Huggins led off with an infield single and David Murphy walked to put runners in scoring position. Mark Saccomanno then drilled a double to left to score Huggins and Murphy came across on an error by the second baseman. Durbin reached on a fielder's choice, and picked up an RBI when Saccomanno scored on the play.
In the sixth, the Cowboys again pulled away with four runs off Zane Carlson, including a three-run shot over the left field wall. OSU closed the win with a grand slam to left field by catcher Matt Oakes in the seventh.
Of note, Durbin has hit five home runs in the last six games.
Baylor returns to action Tuesday with a non-conference game against Southwest Texas State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark. All tickets are $5.
