WACO, Texas - The Baylor baseball team racked up nine hits, but left nine runners on base and fell to UT-Arlington 7-3 Wednesday night at Baylor Ballpark.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 15-6 on the season, while the Mavericks improve to 13-3. UTA's win over Baylor was the first since 1996 and evened the season series at 1-1.
UTA struck first, scoring on a leadoff walk in the first inning. Baylor starter Scott Lehnhoff then settled down and held the Mavericks hitless for the next four innings, facing just 12 batters.
Baylor took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. Kelly Shoppach led off the inning with a single up the middle and Ron Zboril walked to put runners in scoring position. Designated hitter Paul Richmond then blasted a two-run triple down the right line.
The Bears would score a run in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead, but UTA exploded for five runs in the sixth inning and a run in the seventh to put the game away.
Lehnhoff (1-1) allowed six runs on five hits in five and two-thirds innings for the loss. UTA reliever Pierce Loveless (1-1) scattered two hits and struck out four batters over three and a third innings for the win.
