LAWRENCE, Kan. - Matt Williams went 4-for-5 with three doubles and a home run to lead the Baylor baseball team past Kansas 11-2 Friday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.

With the win, the Bears improve to 19-8 overall and 7-3 in Big 12 play, while the Jayhawks fall to 14-12 and 2-8.

Baylor jumped to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Batting second, Trevor Mote reached on a fielder's choice and clean-up hitter Kelly Shoppach blasted a two-run homer to right field to extend his hitting streak to 18 games.

After scoring a run in the fourth inning, the Bears batted around and put up four more runs in the fifth. Mote led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a balk. Chris Durbin walked and Shoppach singled to plate Mote. Facing a new pitcher, both Durbin and Shoppach stole bases and Mike Huggins ripped a two-run double to left center to put Baylor up 7-0.

The Jayhawks spoiled the shutout with an unearned run in the seventh and a home run in the eighth, but Baylor scored two runs in the eighth and ninth innings to put the game away.

Baylor starter Steven White (6-0) worked six innings, scattering four hits and striking out three batters for the win. Freshman Cody Hall came on in relief, giving up two runs on three hits to get his first career save. Kansas starter Justin Wilcher (1-4) gave up six runs on eight hits in four innings of work for the loss.

The teams will meet for game two of the three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m.
