Box Score

WACO, Texas - Chris Durbin was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the Baylor baseball team to a 5-3 win over Oklahoma Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.

With the win, the Bears take the series from the Sooners, 2-1. Baylor also improves to 18-7 overall and 6-3 in Big 12 play. Oklahoma falls to 9-16 and 5-4.

Baylor opened things up in the third inning, when Durbin belted a home run over the left field wall. Oklahoma evened the score in the fifth with a home run to right field from Zach Harris.

The Bears broke the tie with a pair of runs in the sixth. Kelly Shoppach led off with a single to right field and Mike Huggins also singled. Both advanced on an error by the first baseman to put runners at second and third. Steve Dorneman then reached on a fielder's choice to plate Shoppach and Huggins came in on a sacrifice fly by Mark Saccomanno to put the Bears up 3-1.

Baylor put up two more runs in the seventh and Oklahoma threatened with a pair of runs in the ninth, but stellar pitching from Baylor relievers Paul Thorp and Zane Carlson gave the Bears the win.

Thorp (1-0) came on in relief and gave up just one run on one hit in 3.1 innings to get his first win of the season. Bears starter Justin Taylor worked five innings, scattering six hits and giving up one run while striking out eight batters. Sooners' starter Austin Mix (0-4) took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.

Baylor catcher Kelly Shoppach has now hit safely in 16 straight games.

The Bears return to action Tuesday when they travel to Rice for a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
