WACO, Texas - Baylor's Mike Huggins was 2-for-3 with four RBI and Steven White earned his fifth win of the season as the 16th-ranked Bears defeated Oklahoma 5-3 Friday night at Baylor Ballpark.
White (5-0) pitched 7.1 innings giving up three runs on six hits while striking out seven.
Baylor (17-6, 5-2) jumped on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first. Tim Hartshorn led off the inning with a double down the right field line. After moving to third on a ground out, Hartshorn scored on a ground out by Chris Durbin. Kelly Shoppach reached on an error by the third baseman, then scored on a Mike Huggins double to put the Bears up 2-0.
Baylor would put three more runs on the board in the fifth. Three walks in the inning loaded the bases, and Mike Huggins came through with a bases-clearing double to right-center, giving the Bears a 5-0 lead.
Oklahoma (8-15, 4-3) scored a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to cut the lead to 5-3. Paul Thorp relieved White in the eighth with one out and the tying run at the plate. Thorp struck out the two batters he faced to get out of the jam. Zane Carlson came in and struck out the side in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.
Shoppach was 1-for-2 on the evening, extending his hitting streak to 14 games.
Game two of the series will be Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
