WACO,Texas - Despite a strong starting performance from Derek Brehm, Baylor dropped the opener of a three-game series with Cal State Fullerton Friday night at the Baylor Ballpark, 2-1.
Baylor (3-2) could only muster seven hits against starter Jon Smith (1-0) of Cal State Fullerton (2-4), stranding eight runners.
The Bears jumped on the board first in the second inning when David Murphy's triple to left scored Mike Huggins, the only Baylor run of the night. With one out and Murphy at third, the Bears were unable to extend their lead when Mark Saccomanno and Steve Dorneman each struck out.
Fullerton took the lead in the fifth with three straight singles, scoring twice off Derek Brehm (0-1). Kyle Edens relieved Brehm to start the eighth, pitching two scoreless innings and striking out two.
With strong winds blowing in at the Ballpark, both pitchers were able to keep the ball in the park.
Trevor Mote was a bright spot for the Bears, going two-for-two with a walk. The Bears, however were unable to even the score late, going 0-for-nine with runners in scoring position.
Baylor continues play Saturday against Cal State Fullerton as part of a Baylor athletics tripleheader. Baseball begins the day at 1 p.m. with the second game of the series. Baylor's men's basketball plays Nebraska at the Ferrell Center at 5 p.m., followed by the Lady Bears' game at 8 p.m. against Texas A&M.
