WACO, Texas - The 14th-ranked Baylor baseball team defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor 9-0 in a rain-shortened, five-inning game Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark.
The Bears (12-4) wasted no time in jumping to an early lead. Tim Hartshorn led off the game for the Bears with an inside-the-park home run to right field. Batting second, Trevor Mote followed with a home run to right. It marked the first time this season that Baylor has hit back-to-back home runs.
Ross Bennett's pinch-hit triple in the fourth inning scored Hartshorn and Mote and put the Bears up 8-0.
Sophomore Scott Lehnhoff (1-0) got the win for Baylor, pitching a complete game (five innings), allowing four hits and striking out six batters while walking none. UMHB starter Chris Dowdy (1-2) didn't make it to the third inning after giving up five runs in two innings of work.
Kelly Shoppach extended his hitting streak to seven games, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. The Crusaders (1-5) were roughed up early and often by the top of the Bears' lineup. The first five batters for Baylor went a combined 7-for-11 at the plate and knocked in seven of the nine Baylor runs.
Baylor will return to Big 12 action Friday night with a weekend series against Missouri. First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
