WACO, Texas - The Bears exploded for 16 runs on 13 hits as they went on to defeat Nicholls State 16-1 in game one of the double-header Sunday at Baylor Ballpark. The game was called in the seventh inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Steven White (3-0) pitched six innings, giving up one run on five hits while striking out a career-high 10 batters. Jay Lockett pitched the final inning, giving up only one hit.
Nicholls State's (5-5) only run came in the top of the second when Kevin Larpenter singled in Eron Morrow.
The Bears (7-3) scored single runs in the first and second before breaking the game open in the bottom of the third with four runs. Kelly Shoppach, Mike Huggins, and Matt Williams each singled to load the bases. David Murphy then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Shoppach. After a Murphy stolen base and a walk to Nolan Leinweber, Mark Saccomanno singled to left scoring Huggins and Murphy. Tim Hartshorn then grounded out to the pitcher which scored Leinweber and gave the Bears a 6-1 lead.
The bats came alive again in the bottom of the fifth when the Bears scored six more runs highlighted by a two-run double by Trevor Mote and a three-run home run by Kelly Shoppach.
Baylor added three more runs in the sixth to make the final score 16-1.
