Baseball: Baylor Falls to Cal State Fullerton, 5-0

WACO, Texas - Cal State Fullerton got a complete game from pitcher Kirk Saarloos as the Titans (3-5) defeated the Bears 5-0 Sunday at Baylor Ballpark.

Josh Scott (0-1) started for Baylor and gave up two runs on five hits while striking out six. He was relieved by Justin Taylor in the seventh inning, and Taylor gave up two runs on one hit and struck out one batter.

Cal State Fullerton scratched out single runs in the second and fourth innings before putting the game away with three runs in the eighth. In the eighth, Robert Guzman led off with a walk. Brett Kay then reached on an error by Taylor, moving Guzman to third. Louie Lamoure then singled to right scoring Guzman and giving the Titans a 3-0 lead. Shane Costa then singled to left to score Kay and move Lamoure to third. Mike Rouse then drove in Lamoure with a sacrifice fly to left, giving the Titans a 5-0 lead.

Zane Carlson relieved Taylor in the eighth inning and pitched the final two frames. He gave up one run on three hits and struck out two.

The Bears (4-3) were held to only three hits on the afternoon as Saarloos kept the Baylor hitters guessing all afternoon. Kelly Shoppach led the Bears offensively, going two-for-three with two singles.

Baylor will return to action Wednesday when it hosts Southwest Texas State. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
