WACO, Texas -- Steven White scattered just two hits over seven innings to earn his second win of the season as the Baylor baseball team shut out Cal State Fullerton 5-0 Saturday afternoon at the Baylor Ballpark.
With the win, the Bears improve to 4-2, while the Titans fall to 2-5. White, who walked just four batters and struck out five, moves to 2-0 on the season. Nick Lovato (0-2) got the loss for the Titans after giving up three runs on three hits in four innings of work.
After two scoreless innings, Baylor jumped on the board with a pair of runs in the third inning. In the fifth, Baylor widened the gap with three more runs. Senior Trevor Mote led off with a single to left field and Kelly Shoppach reached base on an error by the right fielder to put runners in scoring position. Mike Huggins then smacked a two-run double to left field to put the Bears up 4-0. Two batters later, freshman David Murphy doubled down the left field line to bring in Huggins take a 5-0 lead into the sixth inning.
Bears reliever Paul Thorp held the Titans to just one hit in two innings. Thorp walked one batter and struck out two.
Baylor and Cal State Fullerton return to action for the third game of the series Sunday at 1p.m. at the Baylor Ballpark.
