Waco - In the first game of the Baylor baseball Fall Championship Series, the Gold team defeated the Green team 3-2 and now leads the series 1-0.
Freshman RHP Cody Cortez, a native of Bellaire, Texas, got the win for the Gold team. He pitched two innings of scoreless relief. Derek Brehm started and pitched six innings allowing two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore closer Zane Carlson pitched the ninth inning for the save
For the Green team, junior RHP Kyle Edens went the distance, allowing three runs, two earned on six hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
A two-out double by Nolan Leinweber in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Trey Webb with the eventual winning run.
Transfer Trevor Mote was 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Green Team. Mark Saccomanno was 2-for-3 with three outstanding defensive plays at shortstop for the Green Team.
Game two will be played Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. LHP Josh Scott(Green) will face RHP Justin Taylor(Gold).
