Rhett Holcomb is in his third year on the coaching staff at Baylor and his first as assistant quarterbacks coach in 2025.
Holcomb joined the Baylor coaching staff in March of 2022 after spending the previous two seasons as an offensive graduate assistant coach at Texas A&M. Holcomb spent three seasons as a student equipment manager for Texas A&M and then served as a member of the football personnel staff and as a student-assistant coach for one season.
During his time with Texas A&M and Baylor, Holcomb has been a part of three bowl game titles and helped led the team to four bowls, including championships in the 2018 TaxSlayer Bowl, the 2019 Texas Bowl and the 2020 Orange Bowl, in addition to the 2022 Armed Forces Bowl with the Bears.
Holcomb had a major impact on first-year offensive coordinator Jake Spavital in 2024, helping spur the offensive unit into one of the nation’s best over the last half of the year. While working with the quarterbacks, Holcomb helped mentor Sawyer Robertson into one of the best seasons in program history. Robertson ranked fifth nationally, and tops in the Big 12 in QB Rating, while slinging 28 TDs and 3,071 yards and rushing for four TDs.
The Bears finished the regular season on a six-game winning streak, the longest such streak in program history, and was fueled by an electric offensive attack that ranked in among the nation’s top six units over the final two months of the year.
In October and November, Baylor ranked fifth in yards per game, fifth in yards per play and sixth in points per game nationally. While settling on a starting offensive line through the first six games of the year, with BU owning a 2-4 mark, the Bears averaged 41.3 points per game over the final six games of the regular season, including 505.5 yards per game and 242 rushing yards per contest.
Overall on the year, the Bears ranked among the NCAA leaders in fewest tackles for a loss allowed (fourth), scoring offense (19th), passing efficiency (19th), total offense (20th), passing yards per completion (22nd), first-down offense (27th), third-down conversion percentage (32nd), passing offense (34th) and rushing offense (42nd). BU finished the year ranked No. 23 in FEI offensive rating, and 20th among power-four conference schools.
During his 2022 season with the Bears, Holcomb helped Baylor put up the seventh-most touchdowns and the 10th-most total yards in single-season history. He saw running back Richard Reese shatter the program standard for rushing yards by a freshman, en route to Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year accolades.
Holcomb’s 2020-21 seasons with Texas A&M saw him serve as a graduate assistant coach for the offense. He worked as the personal liaison to the head coach for football, operational and office assistance and in-game served as the signaler of the play call to the wide receivers. He led the defensive scout team in practice and served as the scout team coordinator. He worked directly in film breakdowns for game plan reports and helped in evaluation and communication with recruiting prospects. He helped the Aggies land the nation’s No. 1 ranked recruiting class in 2021.
Prior to his time as a graduate assistant coach, Holcomb was a student-assistant coach for the 2019 season at Texas A&M. He assisted in scouting of future opponents for position coaches and assisted in the daily scout team plan for the offense. He served a role of evaluating future prospects and functioned as a recruiting host while the potential student-athlete was on campus.
Holcomb got his start at Texas A&M for three years as a student equipment manager from 2016-18.
Holcomb is married to Ashlynd Holcomb and the couple is expecting their first child in June of 2023. He is the son of Shane and Kim Holcomb and the brother of Landon Holcomb. He is a 2019 sports management graduate from Texas A&M.
