Iconic Bear Paw returns to Baylor Football uniform
WACO, Texas – A fan-favorite piece of Baylor football history is returning to the field, as the Bears will wear a throwback uniform featuring the iconic bear paw for the Sept. 26 throwback game and Big 12 opener against Colorado at McLane Stadium.
The look pays tribute to an era of Baylor football under Hall of Fame head coach Grant Teaff. Inspired by the bear paw uniforms worn from 1982-92, the throwback recreates the iconic look with the bear paw on the shoulder pads for the first time in more than three decades and B-A-Y-L-O-R across the chest.
The 10 stars on the helmet also pay tribute to Coach Teaff, who introduced the star decals to Baylor’s helmets, led the Bears to their first 10-win season and recorded 10 victories over Texas.
The bear paw uniform is an iconic part of Baylor football history and something that still means a great deal to our former players and fans, Deputy AD Jovan Overshown said. Bringing it back gives us an opportunity to honor Coach Teaff, the teams that wore it and an important era of Baylor football, while introducing that history to a new generation of Bears.
The bear paw was worn by some of the most memorable teams and players of the Teaff era, including the 1991 Bears, who will be recognized and honored during the throwback game against Colorado.
That team delivered one of the signature wins of the era in Boulder, defeating defending national champion Colorado. Santana Dotson helped set up the finish with a blocked kick before Jeff Ireland connected on the game-winning field goal.
Seeing this uniform come back is special, Baylor Hall of Famer and football alumnus Santana Dotson said. So many great memories come back to me. There is a lot of pride and tradition tied to these uniforms, and I think it's special that today's players and Baylor fans will get to experience it again.
