California senior headed down the road to Bryan, Texas
WACO, Texas – After narrowly missing a top-25 finish at the Big 12 Championship, Baylor senior golfer Jonas Appel was selected as one of five individuals for the NCAA Bryan Region that will be held May 18-20 at Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
While the Baylor team did not make the field of 81 teams for the NCAA Tournament, Appel is making his second NCAA regional appearance after subbing in for the final round of the 2024 Chapel Hill Regional. He contributed a counting score with a 1-over 71 that helped the Bears advance to the NCAA Championship at his hometown course in La Costa, Calif.
"I'm really happy for Jonas getting to this regional," interim head coach Ryan Murphy said. "After some very strong play this spring, he's played his way in. As a guy who has been a leader in every imaginable way for this team for four years, it's just satisfying to see him get his due. I know he's excited for the opportunity, as are his coaches."
A consistent top-two player in the lineup each of the last two seasons, Appel carries a 73.12-stroke average into the regional. He had a top-10 finish in the fall at the Pearl at Kalauoa Invitational in Hawaii and then tied for eighth this spring at the Maridoe Collegiate in Dallas.
At last week's Big 12 Championship on the challenging course at Prairie Dunes Country Club, Appel tied for 26th at 5-over 285, shooting 72-71-71-71. As a team, the Bears tied for seventh in the 16-team tournament at 18-over, finishing three shots ahead of 10th-ranked Arizona State.
Fourth-ranked Texas is the top-seeded team at a Bryan Regional that includes the host Texas A&M team, plus TCU, Colorado and Cincinnati from the Big 12. Appel is the No. 3 seed among the individuals selected for the regional, sandwiched between SMU's William Sides and Ben Steinmann and UTA's Arth Sinha and UIW's Joel Talusen.
The top five teams and top two individuals not on an advancing team will advance to the NCAA Championship May 29-June 3 at Omni La Costa Spa and Resort in Carlsbad, Calif.
Baylor is hosting the NCAA Waco Regional for the women's tournament that begins Monday at Ridgewood Country Club. The Bears are seeded fifth in the 12-team tournament that includes top-seeded and fourth-ranked Texas A&M.
