Bears win exciting 8-7 contest in home finale at Baylor Ballpark
Armstrong's record-breaking blast was one of four BU (26-25, 12-15 Big 12) homers on the day, a season high. Freshman outfielder Brady Janusek tied the Baylor freshman record with his 11th round-tripper of the season and redshirt sophomore catcher Brayden Buchanan hit his first-career dinger in the win.
Redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders also hit a two-run homer and freshman infielder Cole Lanclos reached all four times and scored two runs to help the Bears offensively. And BU needed all of it as the Knights (29-19, 17-10 Big 12) wouldn't go quietly in a game that saw two lead changes, one tie, and UCF pull within one run twice.
Fifth-year senior right-hander Caleb Bunch closed it down on the mound with his seventh save of the season, helping secure a win for senior left-hander Ethan Calder in his final home start of his career.
THE RUNDOWN
Both sides were held quiet in the first two innings as Calder was sharp to start the ballgame, retiring the first six in order. In the third, UCF broke the silence with a three-run home run and a solo shot, going back to back to put up the game's first runs at 4-0.
Baylor answered right back in the home half with back-to-back jacks of its own to pull within a run at 4-3. Armstrong launched a two-run shot, his 22nd long ball of the year to break BU's single-season home run record. Then, Janusek crushed his 11th of the year to tie Baylor's all-time freshman home run record, match Max Muncy's 11 from 2010.
Calder came back out and shut down the Knights in the fourth with another 1-2-3 inning. Then, Sanders joined the home run party with a two-run blast of his own to give the Bears a 5-4 lead in the home half.
UCF tied the ballgame back up at 5-5 in the top of the fifth, but the BU offense was able to get the lead right back, this time with some small ball. After redshirt freshman infielder Brytton Clements walked to lead off the inning and fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson bunted for a base hit, a passed ball allowed Clements to score to break the deadlock. Then, a safety squeeze bunt from Lanclos extended the lead to 7-5 as Johnson slid in safely with a nifty swim move.
After one last three up, three down frame for Calder in the sixth, he handed the ball off to the Baylor bullpen to start the seventh. That's when another solo shot for the visitors brought UCF back within one at 7-6, but junior southpaw RJ Ruais did not allow another baserunner in the inning.
Once more, the Bears answered back promptly as Buchanan hit the first home run of his career and pushed BU back out to an 8-6 lead.
A pair of hits in the top of the eighth off Bunch cut Baylor's lead back down to 8-7, but a groundout with two runners in scoring position helped the Bears dance out of danger. In the ninth, UCF threatened again, loading the bases with two outs, but Bunch came up big with a strikeout to finish off the win and secure Baylor's spot in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On the team's response in coming from behind to win…
"There's a lot of fight, there's a lot of heart. We might not win every game, we might not play well every game, but you don't have to question this team's makeup and heart. I'm really proud of their fight."
On Tyce Armstrong's record-breaking home run…
"How cool is it that in his first game here as a Baylor Bear he hits three grand slams, and then in his last game here he breaks the all-time single-season home run record? I was here in 1998 when Charley Carter did it – I talked with him recently and Charley couldn't be any more proud of who broke his record. Those guys are so similar, two peas in a pod, as people, as players, as teammates, as hitters. Really cool that it finally is broken, I'm excited for Tyce and now I want him to hit five more."
Redshirt Senior 1B Tyce Armstrong
On breaking the program's single-season home run record…
"My swing has felt really good, I just hadn't had the opportunity to do it. There were a few balls that I felt like I could have done it on before, but it was awesome today to do it for the guys in a big spot and lift them up. They've had my back, so it was awesome to be able to do that."
Fifth-Year Senior RHP Caleb Bunch
On salvaging the series…
"That's something that's hard to do, coming back out after losing the first two. To come back on Sunday and win a game, that's something we were really trying to do today. Everybody on this team works so hard. When you put in that work and see it put to use in a tight ballgame against a really good team, that's big for us."
