The Bears Set Six New Season Highs and Beat The Ducks
Eugene, OR – The top-ranked Baylor acrobatics & tumbling team delivered a commanding victory over No. 2 Oregon on Friday night at the Matthew Knight Arena, posting a 286.810–277.680 win.
The Bears (9-0) topped the Ducks (5-2) by 9.13 points on the road. Entering the meet, Baylor held a 1.99-point advantage in start value. The win marked the 59th consecutive win for the Bears and have won 15 straight meetings with Oregon.
"Overall, I am proud of the team and the fight they put in tonight. We left some points on the floor in the acro event, but that's something we'll focus on tightening up as we prepare for the championship." said head coach Felicia Mulkey.
To start off the meet in Compulsory, BU and Oregon executed the necessary skills, each heat with a start value of 10. In the Acro heat, Baylor scored a 9.60 and Oregon followed with a 9.70. The Bears took the Pyramid heat, 9.85 to 9.70 before winning the Toss heat with a 9.85, Oregon scoring a 9.80 in the same heat. In the Tumbling heat, BU scored an 9.15, the Ducks scoring 8.95. Through one event, the score was 38.45 to Oregon's 38.15, the Bears up by 0.3 points.
To start the optional portion of the meet in Acro, the Bears and Ducks executed the necessary skills, each heat with a start value of 10. Baylor tied Oregon's of a 9.90 in the 5-element. With Makayla Vasquez as the top and Mo Arthur as the base to earn the score. In the synchronized 6 Element heat, the Ducks scored a 9.50 before Baylor, with four different pairs of tops and bases, scored 9.40. In the third heat, once Oregon competed a 9.85 score, Maddy Jenson and Leavy McDonald scored a 9.90. For the Acro event, BU scored 29.20 to Oregon's 29.25, now totaling 67.65 to 67.40 through two events and Oregon leading by 0.25 points.
In the Pyramid event, again the Bears and Ducks executed the necessary skills, each heat with a start value of 10. Oregon started it off with a 9.80 score in the Inversion heat, which the Bears followed up with a 9.90 score with Criado atop McDonald. Topping the Synchronized heat after the Ducks' 9.85 were Payton Washington and Bott, based by McDonald and Arthur, respectively, which scored a 9.95. In the Open heat, Oregon scored a 9.90 while Baylor earned a 9.95. For the Pyramid event, Baylor scored a 29.80 while the Ducks scored 29.55.
At the half, BU was up 97.45 to 96.95, leading by 0.5 points.
To kick off the second half with the Toss event, it was Alyiah Thomas topping the 450 Salto heat, finishing with a score of 9.65/9.90 after Oregon scored a 9.85/10. In the Synchronized heat, the Ducks earned a 9.55/9.90, and for the Bears, Washington and Tannehill earned a 9.85/10. In the final heat, the Open heat, Oregon scored a 9.70/9.90 before Baylor followed with a 9.85/10 from Washington. At the end of the Toss event, Baylor totaled 29.35 while Oregon had a 21.10. Through four events, BU had a score of 126.80 while Oregon had a 126.05, the Bears up by 0/75 points.
In the Tumbling event, Oregon's duo scored a 9.35/10 while Emily Bott and Lawrence Owens competed for a score of 9.75/10. In the Trio, the Ducks put a score of 9.35/10 on the mat, followed by BU's 9.30/10 from Thomas, Gigi Rendino, and Tannehill. In the Quad pass were Washington, Criado, Sarah Kerr and Gabby Kaminski, scoring a 9.50/10 for their pass, after Oregon put out a 9.0/9.55 score. For the Aerial pass it was Bott, who scored a 9.875/10 after the Ducks earned a 9.725/10 score. Competing in the 6 Element heat was Washington, earning a 9.875/10 after Oregon's 9.85/10. Kerr earned a 9.75/10 for the Open heat, while the Ducks' earned a 9.775/10. Combined, Baylor had a score of 58.05 to finish the Tumbling event while Oregon had a score of 57.05. After five events, BU led 184.85 to 183.10, up by 1.75 points headed into the last event.
In Team event, Oregon scored a 94.58/108.17 and Baylor followed with a 101.96/109.61. Coach Fee described this as "a close meet, but team event really brought it home."
The meet finalized, BU came out on top with a 286.81 score against Oregon's 277.68; the Bears winning by 9.13 points.
