Bears Sweep Acro Event Finals
AZUSA, California - The newly crowned NCATA Champion Baylor acrobatics & tumbling team kept the titles coming on Sunday at the Event Finals, earning seven individual heat trophies.
After winning its 11th-straight NCATA title on Saturday evening, the Bears took the mat again on Saturday morning, competing in all 15 Event Finals, qualifying based on their scores from Thursday's Quarterfinal meets.
Competing against Lander, Duquesne, Quinnipiac, and Oregon, BU took the Five-Element Acro trophy with a score of 9.87/10. Makayla Vasquez was the top, Mo Arthur competed with her namesake skill "the Mo" as the base, and Becca Moore was the counter. This is the sixth Five-Element Acro title for Baylor, and second for McDonald.
In the Six-Element Acro heat, Baylor competed against Hawaii Pacific, Gannon, Quinnipiac, and Iona, earning a score of 9.575. The Bears were represented by Meredith Wells, Emily Bott, Sofia Criado, Ellie LaNeve, Leavy McDonald, Payton Washington, Maddy Jenson, and Nova Schmit, delivering a clean and controlled routine.
In the Seven-Element Acro, Baylor came out on top against UMHB, Augustana, Fairmont State, and Oregon, scoring a 9.80. McDonald, Sofia Criado, and Jenson led the routine for the Bears, showcasing sharp timing and execution to secure all three trophies in the Acro event finals.
After an initial tie with Quinnipiac in the Inversion Pyramid, BU came out with the win for the title. It was Vasquez, Arthur, D'ahni Branch, Ellie LaNeve, Moore, Wells, Kensey Schilhab, and Cassie Karnbach to earn the trophy with a 9.85/10. It is the Bears' seventh Inversion title. The Bears went up against Saint Leo, Quinnipiac, Iona, and Oregon in the heat.
In the Synchronized Pyramid, Baylor defeated Saint Leo, Oregon, Iona, and Gannon, scoring a 9.75/10. It was Baylor's fifth Synchronized Pyramid title in program history. In the pyramids were Washington, McDonald, Arthur, LaNeve, Schilhab, Camryn Jones, Karnbach, Bott, Wells, Gigi Rendino, Branch, Schmit, Tennyson Leiby, Jenson, Moore, and Sutter as the counter.
The Bears took the Open Toss title for just the third time. Earning a score of 9.70/10 were Washington, Leiby, Arthur, Branch, and Schmit, with Sutter as the counter. BU was named champion out of Hawaii Pacific, Quinnipiac, Oregon, and Gannon.
Earning the trophy for the Quad Tumbling pass were Washington, Criado, Sarah Kerr, and Gabby Kaminski after scoring an 8.925/10, completing a front tuck, full, and half to full. It was Baylor's sixth time earning the title for this pass. The Bears beat out Hawaii Pacific, Augustana, Duquesne, and Oregon for the win.
Winning seven event finals on top of the National Championship was a great way to close out the NCATA chapter. See you next year at the NCAA National Championships!
